Konkani Language - Goa
Konkani - Official State Language :

Goa is a multi-lingual state, thanks to its chequered history of thousands of years, which has seen people of various regions, ethnic races and religions from India and abroad coming over to and settling in Goa, while influencing the local language.

At present, Marathi and Konkani are two major languages of Goa. Hindi, the national language of India, is well understood in Goa. In major towns, English is widely used in writing and conversation.

On the other hand, Portuguese, the language of the colonial rulers and the official language till 1961 before liberation, notwithstanding the official patronage and a compulsory medium of study, failed to make a dent in the mind of the majority of Goans.

It remained only the language of the elite but alienated the masses. Thus just after the departure of the Portuguese, Portuguese lost all its favour and usage. However, very few - particularly the older or pre-liberation generation - still use Portuguese.

Konkani and Marathi, much related, survived in Goa by secret studies at home, in temples and public places in villages. Both Konkani and Marathi are derived from Sanskrit, the mother of majority of Indian languages. These two languages use Devnagari script like Sanskrit. Hindi is also written in Devnagari script while Roman script is used for English and Portuguese.

Goans speak Konkani. Konkani is also written in Kannada in Karnataka and in Malayalam script in some parts of Kerala. People residing on the Canara Coast have been following the Kannada script, whereas to the extreme south of Karnataka, on the borders of Kerala, konkani has been written in Malayalam script.

Famous Goan poets and writers have written and published their literature in Konkani. The prominent poets of Goa, Manohar Rai Sardesai, Bakibab Borkar, R.V. Pandit have written various poems on Goa, Goa's natural beauty and its culture. The writers such as Chandrakant Keni, Pundalik Naik, N Shivdas, Dilip Borkar, Mrs. Hema Naik, Mrs. Sheela Kolambkar, have played dominant role in developing konkani lierature.

Konkani plays called "Tiatr" or "Natak" are held in each and every village. "Tiatr" are held by the Goan Christian community and "Natak" are held by the Goan Hindu Community. It is a must for the local Deity's feast. May it be a Local Saint's 'Fest' or a 'Zatra'. It is the way of life for Goans.

Tiatr plays are the folk variety. The Tiatr groups now a days stage plays in prominent towns of Goa and are quite popular. Subjects such as Fiction, Politics, Family life, Social problems are also gaining ground. The prominent Goan Roman Script Monthly magazine being 'GULAB'.

Konkani is also widely spoken in Mangalore, Bombay and some parts of Kerala. Konkani is the official language of Goa and is being used in all the offical correspondence. Konkani Bhasha Mandal is the prime body working for the development of Konkani.

GULAB AWARDS

(Gomantak Times News)

Mathew Araujo receiving the best Actor award from Mathany Saldanha
archbishop Patriarch Filipe Neri Ferrao was awarded the prestigious ‘Gulab Man of the Year’ award at a mesmerising programme held in Gomant Vidya Niketan, Margao on November 26, 2004. The programme had a note of sombriety as it was held for the first time in the absence of Gulab founder Fr. Freddy J da Costa.

Yet another priest, Fr. Moreno D’Souza S.J., bagged the Gulab award for best writer in Roman Konkani. Fr D’Souza, besides contributing regularly to Gulab, also edits the monthly magazine, Dor Mhoineachi Roti. He has also written a number of books particularly on the history of the various churches in Goa.

The sportsperson of the year award was conferred upon Robert Fernandes of Salgaoncar Sports Club. Sports Minister Mathany Saldanha who announced the winner and also presented the trophy eulogised Fr. Freddy and pointed out his great vision. Referring to a Mando written by Fr. Freddy years back wherein he had cautioned about tourists taking over Goa, Saldanha, who is also the Tourism Minister, rued that those words were proving to be prophetic.

Ben Evangelisto’s Devak Zai Zalear and Mario Menezes’ Tiatr Somplo Cholat Ghora dominated the Gulab awards for tiatrs bagging two awards each.

Ben Evangelisto himself won the award for the best tiatr writer winning over Roseferns for Maim, Tuzo Put Hanv and Jose Rod for Devan Dilem Devcharan Vhelem who were nominated in this category.

Marthew Araujo created history by bagging the award for Best Actor for the second consecutive year. He won the Gulab award for his portrayal of the doctor’s role in Ben Evangelisto’s Devak Zai Zalear.

Mathew Araujo announced the winner of this year’s Best Actress award which went to Sabina for her role of the wicked mother-in-law in Mario Menezes’ tiatr Somplo Cholat Ghora.

This is the second year in running that the female artiste from Mario Menezes’ troupe bagged the Gulab award for best actress as last year Rosy Alvares had walked away with it.

The best director award was bagged by Mario Menezes for his tiatr Somplo, Cholat Ghora. The other directors nominated for this award were Jose Rod for Devan Dilem Devcharan Vhelem and Ben Evangelisto for Devak Zai Zalear.

Noted music composer Josinho walked away with the trophy for the Best Musician. He won the award for the music composed by him for Jose Rod’s Devan Dilem Devcharan Vhelem. He beat his contemporary Juju who had won two nominations for producing the music for Ben Evangelisto’s Devak Zai Zalear and Roseferns’ Maim Tuzo Put Hanv.

Noted singer Anthony D’Souza who is part of the famous Trio Kings announced the winner of the new award for Best Comedian which was bagged by Agostinho. Mr D’Souza also presented the award.

With the institution of this new award, the total Gulab awards have gone up to nine of which six are dedicated to tiatrs and tiatrists.

Gulab Editor Fausto V Da Costa thanked the audience and also his family members for helping to organise the function. He urged tiatrists to work hand in hand with Gulab for the preservation and promotion of Konkani language.

Julio D’Silva, who compered the show with aplomb, requested the tiatrists to patronise Gulab with advertisements so that the magazine can survive. The awards were presented amidst an entertainment programme which included a playlet written and directed by Lawry Travasso based on the vocation to be a priest and nun. Mario Menezes, Rosy Alvares, Lawry, Agnes, Mathew, Ulhas Tari, Agostinho and Ambe acted in this playlet which also included two comedy scenes through which Agostinho and Ambe had the audience rolling in laughter.

Osvy Viegas sang a soulful song paying tribute to the good work done by Fr. Freddy. Ben Evangelisto delighted the crowd with his comedy song during which he appeared on stage in drag.

Lawry wrote a special song on Gulab which started the show rolling and later sang another which had been a hit during the last tiatr season. The second song paid tribute to Fr. Freddy and Felicio Cardoso.

Mabel Da Costa trained a group of amateurs to render two mandos written by Fr. Freddy. Both the mandos – Altarachea Panvddear Re Pavoinu and Soglleo Romasi Vachunu – were very well received by the audience.
